Anu Tuominen: Blue

In her series of solo exhibitions Anu Tuominen will show her latest works under a theme “blue” in Art-U room, Tokyo. Her works consist of daily utensils transformed into art pieces; they reflect the Finnish culture, nature and lifestyle.

Cultural Exhibition of Forest and Life

Exhibition of Finnish life, culture and art is held at LUOMU no mori, a complex with a cafe, a gallery and possibility of forest adventure in Kita-Karuizawa. The concept of the complex is to live with forests and “follow the nature (=LUOMU)”.

Tuomas Laitinen at Youkobo Art Space

Visual artist Tuomas Laitinen (b. 1976) will stay at the Youkobo Art Space residency in January and February 2011.

Laitinen works with various media including light boxes, neon, video, printmaking and sound. He holds a MA from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. In recent years Laitinen’s works have participated in exhibitions by invitation at the Paulo Foundation, Gothenburg Art Hall, Helsinki City Art Museum, Riga Art Space, Moca – Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art and Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.

At the moment Laitinen’s four works are exhibited in January–March 2011 at Art+Shanghai Gallery in Shanghai.

Tuomas Laitinen spends his free time composing harsh disco music for his solo venture Moby Dictator.

Miyukino Film Festival celebrates Nordic films

3rd Miyukino short film festival is held in Madarao ski resort in Nagano-ken. It is focusing on Nordic films, and the specialty of the festival is an outside theatre made of snow. The viewers are sitting on benches carved in snow, and the films are screened on the icy wall.

This year there are five entries from Finland: The Harvest (Elonkorjuu, 2006) by Sami Korjus, Woodsmen (Kainuulaisia, 2006) by Timo Korhonen, Magic Night (Taikayö, 2006) by Jouni Hiltunen, and two animations in the series of animal stories by Jaana Wahlforss and Antonia Ringbom, Crow and Nightingale (Varis ja satakieli, 2005) and Song for Free Pigs (Laulu vapaille sioille, 2005).

Tokyo Northern Lights Festival

A new film festival held in EuroSpace & UpLink in Shibuya, Tokyo, is focusing on Nordic cinema. This year it presents extensively the works by directors Lars von Trier (Denmark) and Lukas Moodysson (Sweden). Finland is represented by the film Revolution (2006) by Jouko Aaltonen. The documentary film concentrates on the 1970’s left wing revolutionary singers in Finland. Finland is also a scene in Michael Madsen’s (Denmark) captivating documentary “Into Eternity” (2009) that focuses on the world’s first permanent nuclear waste repository located in Finland.

Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama (TPAM)

The biggest performing arts fair in Asia will this time be mounted in the vibrant Yokohama dock area. The Susanna Leinonen Company will perform the dance production “And the Line Begins to Blur” on 17 February as part of the Finnish–Canadian International Showcase, taking place in the Kanagawa Arts Theatre (KAAT) Hall in Yokohama. After the performances there will be a joint/joined Finland–Quebec reception.

Dance Info Finland will join the TPAM with its own booth, and “The Sacred City” performance art project is also a part of the TPAM programme.

Meri Nikula: TRILOGY: Human Conditions


Dancer, visual artist Meri Nikula will perform at Tokyo Experimental Festival in Shibuya, Tokyo. Human Conditions consist of three parts, including live performances and video. In her performances Nikula uses both live voice and recordings.

”The Sacred City”

“The Sacred City” is a collective quest for an experience of the sacred in the urban environment. The Finnish–Japanese performing arts project between Reality Research Center and Japanese artists started last November in Helsinki. Now they will end their joint project in Zou-no-hana, Yokohama during TPAM. They will be working during the two week period (9–19 February), and the actual performances will take place in 18–19 February.

Japanese artist Kensuke Shimizu living in Turku, Finland, will exhibit his works reflecting his impressions on Finland in Gallery 80 in Omotesando Hills, Tokyo.

The Sibelius Society of Japan 25th Anniversary

The Sibelius Society of Japan will celebrate its 25th Anniversary with a marathon concert of the complete Sibelius solo piano works in one concert. The performers in Sumida Triphony Hall (Tokyo) concert include for example Izumi Tateno.


Tickets: 3000/2000 yen (adults/members, students) at the door
