What is Feel Finland in Science 2006?
Both Japanese and Finnish societies are now facing the common challenges such as the need to strengthen international competitiveness, dealing with aging society and environment issues. Surely, better result will be achieved if Japan and Finland would cooperate and propose solutions to those issues together than each country trying to find the solution by herself. Coincidently, both governments have chosen the same priority areas in its science and technology policy. In aspects of culture, both Finland and Japan have the common basis of respecting traditions and at the same time adapting willingly to something new. Our sincere wish is to build the base for exchange and cooperation both in cultural and in academic fields. For that very reason, we’d like you to learn about the current situation of Finnish science and research. That’s why we’ve decided to organize this campaign, Feel Finland in Science 2006.
Feel Finland in Science 2006 is a campaign to introduce Finland as a land of science to all of you in Japan, so that you will have an opportunity to get to know excellent achievements of Finnish scientists. We will find out how much our daily life benefits from the Finnish top research results, and how much they are contributing to the quality of life. This campaign, by introducing various Finnish programmes for research and education, also plays an important role in introducing Finland’s consistent effort of establishing the higher education system.
Some projects for the campaign:
-Studia Generalia – lecture series (October 2006)
This lecture series will be organized by inviting the leading experts in each field from Finland.
-Introducing Finnish science and research to Japanese universities (throughout the year)
The staff of the Finnish Institute in Japan will make a tour to Japanese universities and inform researchers and other staff of the current situation of Finnish science research and priority research areas of Finnish universities.
-Introducing science and research of Japanese universities to Finnish universities (June 2006)
The staff of the Finnish Institute in Japan will visit universities in Finland and will provide researchers and other staff with the information acquired during the tour on the section 2), such as priority research areas in Japanese universities.
-Researcher exchange and seminars (throughout the year)
Seminars and workshops by Finnish and Japanese researchers on the topics that appeal equally both Finnish and Japanese public will be held all over Japan.
There are indeed many more features in Finnish science than described above. We'd like each of you to join the events and find out yourself all the possibilities that science and its achievement offer every one of us on this planet.
