The Finnish Institute in Japan

The Finnish Institute in Japan promotes co-operation between Finland and Japan in research, higher education and culture. It provides information and contacts for academics, researchers and cultural actors who need support for their projects in Japan.

The Institute also offers information on research, education and culture for media and journalists. The Institute gives information on courses and scholarships, and provides contacts for Finnish researchers and students who want to study in Japanese institutions and vice versa.

The Birth of Aalto University from a Student Point of View

Professor Grätzel wins the 2010 Millennium Technology Grand Prize for dye-sensitized solar cells

The Millennium Technology Prize is Finland's tribute to developers of life-enhancing technological innovations, awarded biannually. In 2010 the total amount of the prizes is 1,1 million euro of which one million comes from the Finnish state and 100,000 euro from Technology Academy Finland. The main prize is 800,000 euro, and the other Laureates will be awarded 150,000 euro each.

Professor Michael Grätzel from Switzerland was awarded the 2010 Millennium Technology Prize for his third generation, low cost, dye-sensitized solar cells. The winner was decided by the Board of Directors of Technology Academy Finland, based on the recommendation of the International Selection Committee. President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen handed the 800,000 euro Grand Prize and the prize trophy “Peak” to Professor Grätzel on June 9.

Prof. Airaksinen lectured at Tokyo Institute of Technology

Prof. Timo Airaksinen from the University of Helsinki lectured on “Fin and Japanese technology from a philosopher perspective” at Tokyo Institute of Technology on 10 Feb as a part of event series, “Norden at Tokyo Tech”.

Finnish-Japanese call for joint research in future of living

 Academy of Finland and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science opened a joint call for collaborative research projects in the field of future of living and for joint seminars in all fields. The call for Finnish researchers will be closed on 29 January 2010 and for Japanese researchers on 17 February 2010.
