The Foundation of the Finnish Institute in Japan was founded in Helsinki in September 1997 by thirty-three parties in the fields of research, education, technology, arts and business. Later the number of members has grown to 39. The sole task of the foundation is to support the Finnish Institute in Japan. The foundation is supported by the Ministry of Education in Finland. Minister of Culture and Minister of Education are always members of the foundation supervisory board.
The members of the foundation form the Supervisory Board (valtuuskunta) of the Finnish Institute in Japan. The supervisory board selects the executive board (hallitus) members.
